Dante had been pacing for hours when he heard Becca’s key in the door. He nearly cried with relief when she came in, but stopped abruptly when he saw her face. She was stiff, limping, but when he walked towards her she held up her hand, stopping him. She limped to the couch and sat down, putting her swollen foot on the coffee table.

“Querida, what happened?” He tried to lean over for a kiss, but she turned her face.

“What happened?” She turned sad, lifeless eyes to him. “The club got raided and Jamie and I went to jail. Where the fuck were you?” Her words were angry but her voice held no emotion whatsoever.

“I went into the kitchen to get a plastic bag for the ice and when the raid started, one of the managers grabbed me and a couple of the cooks and took us out the back. I had no ID, no wallet, nothing. I tried to get back in, told them I’d been there and needed my ID, but the police wouldn’t allow it. It took me nearly three hours to get my phone and wallet, and I’d already sent a lawyer for you.”

“Thanks for that, at least.” She struggled to her feet and made her way into the bedroom. She went to the closet and started pulling out her clothes.

“What are you doing?” he asked quietly, watching her.

“Packing. I made a reservation on the 7:00 a.m. flight home.”

“Why?”

“Because I need to start damage control.”

“For what? You didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Did you miss the part where reporters got pictures of me and Jamie coming out of the fucking police station?!” She threw up her hands and looked down at her chest. “Look at me! I’m in a fucking halter top and a skirt so short you can see my ass! I look like a 20-dollar hooker who got arrested with one of the players on the team I work for! What part of this doesn’t seem like a problem to you?!” She threw the stack of clothes in her hand into her suitcase in a huff.

“Becca, I understand it’s been a stressful evening and—”

“Stressful for whom?” she snapped, glaring at him. “You didn’t get hauled out of there like a common criminal—I did! You weren’t sitting at the fucking police station for three fucking hours—I was! No one took your picture for the papers—they took mine!” She threw the rest of her things in the suitcase and then stomped into the bathroom.

Shaking with anger and frustration, she leaned against the sink and took a few deep, steadying breaths. She pulled her hair into a ponytail and yanked off her clothes, grateful for the robe hanging behind the door. She washed her face, brushed her teeth and finally used the bathroom. Her ankle was on fire, her stomach was churning and she felt like she was going to throw up. Coming to New York had definitely been the worst idea she’d ever had.

“Becca?” Dante’s deep voice came through the door as he knocked.
